MUNI Explorer Trip

June 4, 2000

IMPORTANT UPDATE! The starting point for this excursion has been changed to the Caltrain Station at 4th Street & King Street. The excursion WILL be stopping at Mission Street & The Embarcadero for anyone who may not have received this updated information. The starting time will remain the same.

The trip will consist of a four hour charter using cars from Muni’s historic fleet. We will begin on The Embarcadero near the Ferry Building at 12:00 noon and will terminate at Muni’s Geneva Carhouse at Geneva and San Jose Ave. A box lunch will be provided on the trip and passengers will be given free transportation using Muni LRVs in regular service to return to the starting point.

Starting Point

As this is written the starting point will be on The Embarcadero at Mission Street using streetcar trackage not in regular service situated in the center strip of the Embarcadero. This is just south of the Ferry Building and south of the regular Muni streetcar stop. Please note that we will not be stopping at any regular streetcar stops.

If some necessary overhead wire work is completed in time for our trip, the starting point will be moved to the Caltrain station at 4th and King Streets. Look for news of this change at either our web page – http:/www.goldenstaterails.com -- or listen to our info hotline by calling 408-278-5051. If the starting point is changed and you miss the news, we will still pick up any waiting passengers on The Embarcadero at Mission Street.

Caltrain # 255 leaving San Jose at 10:00 am and arriving San Francisco at 11:31 will be a guaranteed connection with the trip. With the starting point at the Ferry Building, passengers will need to take a Muni Route ‘N’ Judah LRV in regular service from the Caltrain depot to the Muni Metro subway Embarcadero Station in order to connect with the trip. Leaving the Embarcadero Station it is about a two block walk to The Embarcadero and Mission Street. The fare is $1.00.

Return to Starting Point

As the trip does not return to the starting point we have arranged with the Muni to provide our passengers with free transportation on LRVs in regular service to get back to the point of origin.

All three LRV routes [J, K, & M] that terminate in the vicinity of the Geneva Carhouse go downtown and utilize the Muni Metro subway beneath Market Street. They terminate at the Embarcadero Station. Passengers going on to the Caltrain depot at 4th & King will need to transfer at this same station to an outbound Route ‘N’ Judah LRV on the same platform. This is a free transfer.

Equipment

The precise equipment used from Muni’s historic fleet will depend on a car's availability and on the number of tickets sold. The trip will use from one to three cars -- all of which need to be double ended. We have requested the following cars for our trip: Muni #1 [Muni’s first streetcar built in 1912 by the Holman Car Co.] , Muni #130 [built in 1914 by the Jewett Car Co.] , and Muni #1015 [a double ended PCC built by St. Louis Car Co. in 1948 -- now painted in Illinois Terminal colors]. If any of these cars are unavailable, or if ticket sales do not justify the use of more than one, or two cars, we reserve the right to substitute other Muni streetcars that will meet our requirements, and/or use fewer cars.

Lunch

Box lunches and drinks will be provided. They will be distributed to passengers at approximately 1:00 PM.

Route

Our trip will cover most of the trackage that can be used by trolley pole equipped cars. From the starting point near the Ferry Building [or from the Caltrain depot] we will proceed northbound along The Embarcadero to Fisherman's Wharf. Depending on traffic, we may either go all the way to the end of the line at Jones and Jefferson, or we may short turn at Pier 39. Either way we'll then head back to the Ferry Building and proceed out Market Street via Route ‘F’. At Duboce we'll turn off Market Street and cut through the Mint Yard. At the end of the yard a short stop will be made to load the lunches. Leaving the yard we'll turn left on Church Street and follow Route ‘J’ to it's terminus near the Geneva Carhouse. We will not stop here however, but will continue along the ‘M’ Route inbound to West Portal. At West Portal we will turn left and head out Route ‘L’ along Taraval Avenue to Ocean Beach. We will not use the loop going to the zoo, but rather we'll change ends on the double track at the end of Taraval. This section of track does not see regular service. Returning we'll go inbound on the ‘L’ to West Portal and make a right turn. We will now use Route ‘K’ on Ocean Avenue to reach the end of our journey at Geneva Carhouse. At the carhouse we hope to have the opportunity to photograph other cars in the historic fleet.
